Professor Christopher McCullough

Emeritus Professor of Drama

The Department of Drama is sad to announce the death of Prof. Christopher McCullough, Emeritus Professor in Theatre, on 23 July 2021.
Joining the department in 1987, Chris was for many years Head of School, and Head of the Department of Drama, overseeing a programme of expansion in infrastructure, staff and students, building one of the largest and most varied departments nationally. He was an unflagging advocate for the discipline, serving on many national bodies, including the subject association, the Standing Committee of University Drama Departments.

Chris was a polymath, a fine artist and contemporary dancer, before turning to theatre directing and academia. He was committed to the integration of research and practice, with a passionate interest in Shakespeare (co-creating the innovative MFA in Staging Shakespeare with the newly-opened Globe Theatre), in Brecht and twentieth-century European political theatre, Theatre and Europe: 1957-95 (1996). He was a fantastic teacher and brought his always playful energy to make something positive and creative happen, even in difficult times. He will be remembered with great fondness by the many undergraduates he worked with in the studio and seminar room, and by the many taught post-graduate and PhD researchers he supervised over his long career.
